Causes Of Penile Dysfunction
There are many medical causes of penile dysfunction. The commonest symptom of penile dysfunction is erection problems but there are other symptoms which although less common still affect many men. The main conditions are listed below with some detail about the problem and possible treatments.
Erectile Dysfunction
This is the commonest problem affecting many men as they reach middle age. There are a variety of medical conditions and prescription drugs that can be involved. Diabetes, alcohol problems, heart disease and prescription drug side effects are probably the most common.
Unfortunately around 50% od men with diabetes may develop erectile dysfunction. This is due to damage to the nerves and blood vessels caused by many years of high or poorly controlled blood sugar. The damage is often permanent and erection problems are treated either with drugs such as Viagra or penile implants.
Penile Thrush
Many men think that thrush is a female problem and doesn't affect them. They are wrong. Men can develop penile thrush if they take antibiotics for a long time, have impaired immune systems, have diabetes or have sex with an infected woman, although this is an uncommon cause.
The symptoms are a red rash and an itching or burning sensation at the end of your penis. It is easy to treat with over the counter anti-fungal creams.
Penile Discharge
Penile discharges present in a variety of ways. They may be painful or not, strong smelling, offensive, green or clear and possibly bloody. There are many causes such as bladder or kidney infections, prostatitis and sexually transmitted infections (STI). It partly depends on your other symptoms and recent history. If you are too embarrassed to see your own GP then go to the STI clinic for a diagnosis and treatment. Antibiotics will cure most STI's and bladder/kidney infections although prostatitis may be more difficult.
Penile Warts
Penile warts are a not uncommon problem. They are caused by the human papillomavirus and are one of the most frequently diagnosed STI's worldwide. You may get warts which are soft and a bit moist, sometimes flesh coloured usually round your penis or anus but possibly also the scrotum and thighs. You can have the wart virus without any warts being present.
They may be treated with creams or slightly more aggressively by freezing, burning or lasering. Although the warts are treated the virus remains and they may reoccur.
Penile Cancer
This a rare cancer affecting men. The commonest symptoms are a lump on the penis with redness or irritation. It is very rare and treatment involves one or more of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
